Group Says Kids Don’t Get Enough Recess Time

Some Wichita parents don’t believe their children are getting enough recess time. A group of parents spoke out at the Wichita School Board meeting. Now the board says it will develop a committee to study the issue and recommend changes, if any. The concerned parents have also now formed a Facebook group called More Recess Wichita.

KS House Approves Ethnic Studies Program

Kansas House members gave initial approval Monday to creating an ethnic studies curriculum for grades 7-12, but rejected the bill on a final vote. The bill called for the state to develop a curriculum and materials on the experiences of African, Asian, Latino and Native Americans. The curriculum would have been optional for districts.

Shockers Clinch #1 Seed in MVC

And in sports, the Wichita State SHockers routed Indiana State last night 84-51. Ron Baker scored 14 points to lead the Shocks. He also had five rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. The SHockers are now 21-7 overall, 12-2 in the Valley. They have now clinched the #1 seed in the Missouri Valley Tornament.

One Person Killed In SE Sedgwick County Crash

Breaking news this morning, where one person has died in a crash in Southeast Sedgwick County. It happened about 5am just north of 159th Street East and 47th Street South. All we know at this time is that two vehicles collided and one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deadly Apartment Fire In Wichita

Authorities say one person has died in a fire that was contained to a single unit of a seven-floor Wichita apartment building. Wichita fire marshal Brad Crisp tells the Eagle newspaper a resident called Sunday afternoon to report that his apartment at Shadyway Plaza Towers was on fire. The victim’s name was not released Sunday.

Former Cowboys RB Randle Arrested Again In Wichita

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle is jailed again in Kansas on suspicion of aggravated battery, drug possession and criminal damage to property. An official at the Sedgwick County Jail in Randle’s hometown of Wichita says the 24-year-old was arrested and booked around 8:15 a.m. Sunday. Bond is set at $100,000.

WSU Murderer Sentenced

And a man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a murder at Wichita State University. Isaiah Copridge learned his fate yesterday in district court in Sedgwick County. He pleaded guilty to secon degree murder and aggravated robbery in the death of Rayan Ibrahim Baba at Fairmount Towers.

Mayberry MS Coach arrested

Wichita school leaders confirm the arrest of Mayberry Middle School PE teacher and girls track coach Terry Couch. Couch was booked into jail Wednesday for two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. According to the school district’s bio on their website, Couch had been the girls track coach for 32 years.

KS Senate Votes To Shorten Session

The Kansas Senate has approved a bill designed to shorten the Legislature’s annual sessions. Its vote Thursday was 25-11 on a measure that would limit sessions to 100 days in odd-numbered years and to 60 days in even-numbered years.

Fire Danger Continues To Be High

Fire officials continue to warn of extreme fire danger through the weekend, with the unseasonably warm temperature and lack of moisture. Several grass fires were reported across central and southern Kansas yesterday. Temperatures hit 90 degrees in Great Bend yesterday. It should cool off a bit today, but still remain much warmer than normal.
