Mother; Boyfriend Formally Charged With Boy’s Murder

A Wichita mother and her boyfriend are now formally charged with killing a boy whose remains were found encased in concrete. The body of 3 year-old Evan Brewer were discovered at a home in South Wichita on September 2nd. Now, Stephen Bodine and Miranda Miller faced a judge on Tuesday to hear the charges against them. Both were already in jail on unrelated charges connnected to a custody battle over the boy. Evan Brewer is the son of Carlo Brewer, who has reported that he furiously tried to gain custody of his son due to suspected problems, but the state stopped him every step of the way. Miller and Bodine are held now on a half million dollars bond each.

Wichita Man Who Was Captured In Baghdad Has Died

The daughter of an American man who was abducted in Baghdad last year says he has died from complications stemming from his month in captivity. Amanda Frost says her father, Russell Frost, died Thursday at his home in Wichita. She says her father lost more than 40 pounds in captivity because of dehydration and malnutrition, which caused kidney problems. He and two co-workers were abducted in January 2016.

One Dead In Overnight Wichita Shooting

Wichita Police have been busy overnight with a shooting investigation on the southeast side. It happened just after 8pm in the 2600 block of East Wilma. That’s near George Washington and Harry Street. Officers actually found two people there with gunshot wounds. One of the victims was dead. The other victim was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Police have not said if they believe the men were in an altercation or if someone else shot them.

Soy Processing Plant In Hutchinson Closes; 77 Jobs Lost

A soy processing plant in Hutchinson has closed, costing 77 people their jobs. CHS Inc. announced Friday that the Hutchinson plant was one of three it was closing as it moves out of soybean protein production. The others were in Creston, Iowa, and its Innovation and Technology Center at Eagan, Minnesota.

KS Widow Sues Barber County Sheriff Over Husband’s Killing

A Kansas woman is now taking her fight with the Barber County Sheriff to federal court. Kristina Myers filed a federal lawsuit Thursday, alleging that sheriff’s deputies shot and killed her husband in Sun City while he was standing with bare hands at his sides. The lawsuit claims Steven Myers was not being threatening. Undersheriff Virgil Brewer fired what’s considered a less-than-lethal bean bag round at Myers while at close range. Dashcam video of the incident is being used as evidence. In the video, you can hear Sheriff Lonnie Small saying “Shot him with a bean bag round. Hadn’t shot anybody with it yet.” No word yet on when an initial federal court hearing in Wichita will take place.

Andover Girl Reports Being Followed Home By Strangers

We begin in Andover, where the local school district has sent a letter to parents across the district notifying them that a female student reported she was followed by strangers Thursday. The girl is 11 years old and was walking hom from school in the Crescent Lakes subdivision. She reported a man and woman in a white SUV began following her at about 5pm near the park at the corner of Westchester and Woodstone. The girl also said the driver pulled up right beside her and the female passenger opened the door. That’s when the girl said she ran off. If you know anything about this case, call police.

Fmr. KS Congressman Pompeo Rumored To Be Next Sec. of State

There is now talk about former Kansas Congressman Mike Pompeo being lifted to one of the most powerful positions in the world… Secretray of State. The Associated Press reports there is more turmoil in the Trump administration, with leaders trying to figure out how to oust current Secretry of State Rex Tillerson. Pompe left his Congressional job to be the new CIA Director. The Secretary of State is the main US official in charge of American diplomacy. Tillerson, the former Exxon Mobil CEO, has had a rough first year characterized by tensions with Trump in several foreign policy areas and negative publicity over Tillerson’s envisioned overhaul of the State Department.

KS Lawmakers Pull Support For Building New Prison

A Kansas legislative committee won’t endorse a plan from state corrections officials to build a new prison mainly because of how the project would be financed. The state Department of Corrections outlined its plan Thursday to have the nation’s largest private prison operator build the new prison and lease it to the state. The committee said department should pursue financing the project with state bonds instead.

Officer Arterburn Returns Home To Continue Recovery

A Wichita Police Officer who was critically injured while on duty – has finally returned home. Officer Brian Arterburn was run over by a car driven by a man who was fleeing a search warrant in South Wichita. Arterburn was trying to stop the suspect by laying down spike strips in the roadway when he was struck. Since February, Arterburn has gone through numerous therapy programs at several different hospitals across the country. Yesterday, Arterburn’s plane landed at Mid-Continent Airport to bring him home. There will also be a welcome home celebration for Officer Arterburn this Saturday at Harvest Community Church, located at 8340 West 21st Street from 1-3pm.

Cowley County Inmate Dies In Cell

AN investigation is ongoing at the Cowley County Jail, where the sheriff says an inmate was found unresponsive last night. The inmate is identified as 33 year-old Jesse Crable, of Winfield. Crable was pronounced dead at the jail. The sheriff says an autopsy is scheduled for today to help prpvide details as to why Crable suddenly collapsed in his cell.
